Important Research Study to participate in – Understanding the role of cognitive performance in persistent pain

02/05/2022

Chance for anyone (living with pain or not) to participate in this important study under the auspices of Professor Lorimer Moseley.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 people experience pain that persists for longer than 3 months, making it a global health concern. Understanding what makes some people more susceptible to the development and maintenance of persistent pain is important for determining therapeutic targets that may aid in recovery. This study is an online survey that aims to understand the role of cognitive performance in persistent pain.

The Discovery Zone showcases research studies looking for participants and those reporting results that we feel will benefit our Festival goers. We want to encourage people to engage in research into pain and there are increasing opportunities for this to happen which can only help everyone.

This study is called:

“Understanding the role of cognitive performance in persistent pain”

and is run by the following researchers:

Caitlin Howlett, Dr. Scott Coussens, Dr. Carolyn Berryman, Dr. Emma Karran, Dr. Valeria Bellan, Stephanie Miles, Prof. Lorimer Moseley

from the Body in Mind Research Group within the Innovation, Implementation and Clinical Translation (IIMPACT) in Health Group at the University of South Australia.

What is the study about?

It is estimated that 1 in 5 people experience pain that persists for longer than 3 months, making it a global health concern. Understanding what makes some people more susceptible to the development and maintenance of persistent pain is important for determining therapeutic targets that may aid in recovery. This study is an online survey that aims to understand the role of cognitive performance in persistent pain.

Who can participate?

You are eligible to participate if you are at least 18 years of age, able to read and understand English, are pain-free or living with persistent pain (i.e., pain experienced most days for 3 months or longer), have access to a computer/laptop or smartphone device with internet access, have normal or corrected to normal (e.g., glasses or contact lenses) vision, and are not colour-blind. You are not required to be experiencing persistent pain to participate.

The link on the button will take you to the study – it does require you to download an app for your device/computer but this can be deleted as soon as you have completed it. The surveys will take around half an hour to complete, but read the information document well before you start.

What will participation in this study involve?

If you agree to participate, you will be required to complete an online screening questionnaire that will determine whether you are eligible to participate. If you are deemed eligible, you will then be asked to fill in an online questionnaire that includes questions surrounding your age, gender, education level, basic health background and experience of pain. You will then be provided with three additional short questionnaires, two asking you to how much you agree or disagree with various statements and the other asking you to reflect on how often you have experienced health complaints (e.g., headaches) in the past 12 months. Lastly, you will be asked to complete a self-paced card-sorting task. This online survey is entirely anonymous and will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete; however, please be mindful that completion times can vary since there is no time limit for the card-sorting task.
